New Comedy Show For
Emerging Brummie Talent

Providing opportunities for Birmingham acts to pursue comedy careers

Birmingham, 19th February 2014 – A new initiative is launching in Birmingham this week, which aims to give local talent the opportunity to pursue careers in the comedy world. POD Comedy, which will have it’s inaugural show this coming Sunday, will be showcasing local comedians as well as offering help to newcomers who want to experience the thrill of performing live comedy.

The first POD Comedy live show is taking place at the historic Fox and Goose pub in East Birmingham on the 23rd of February 2014, and has an all-Brummie line-up of comedy talent, which includes musical comedians, character comedy and sketch groups as well as more traditional stand-up performances. Entry is free of charge.

Local comedian Jay Islaam, who created POD Comedy, commented: “It’s very exciting to be offering a new platform for new and established local comedy talent to develop and display their work. Unlike other big cities – London, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle – Birmingham seems to have relatively few performance opportunities for local comedy talent. Which means many of our brightest and best comedians are forced to travel hundreds of miles for the opportunity to show an audience what they can do. Which also discourages new talent from coming through.

“POD Comedy will give local comedians and comedy audiences a place to come and enjoy the art form. We will also be providing free training and encouragement to local people who are interested in trying their hand at performing. There is a lot of untapped talent in Birmingham that deserves to be developed and given a platform. POD Comedy hopes to play a part in doing just that.”

POD Comedy has already attracted interest from residents in East Birmingham, and will very soon be welcoming several brand new comedians to the stage for their first ever performances. At least 60% of the schedule for each live show will be reserved for local talent from Birmingham and the Midlands. However, there will also be special guest performers from all of the UK, including as far afield as Brighton, Wales and Scotland.

POD Comedy will run monthly at the Fox and Goose pub, on Washwood Heath Road in Birmingham, on the last Sunday of every month. The first show will take place at 6.30pm on Sunday the 23rd of February, and will feature an all-Brummie line-up of talent.
